For women in Texas, notably but not exclusively in the larger cities of Dallas, Houston and Austin, health is an ongoing concern, as it is in other areas of the country. One of the biggest health issues is one that’s closest to the heart. Quite literally.

The fact is, heart disease is responsible for the death of more American women under the age of 45 than any other single disease, including ****** cancer. Whether someone has health insurance or not, more than half a million women a year die from heart disease. And more than 60% of those had no previous symptoms.

When a woman does find herself suffering from heart disease, she’s less likely than a man to receive aggressive medical treatment, according to the American Heart Association. She’s also more likely than a man to die from heart disease: 38% of women (compared with 25% of men) will die within one year following a heart attack.

While two risk factors — the aging process itself and a family history of heart disease — aren’t something a woman can change, others can be changed.

Smoking is one area that can tip the scales in favor of a woman, as far as risk of heart disease is concerned. With numerous support programs available, in cities such as Houston, Dallas and Austin and throughout Texas, a woman wanting to quit smoking is well-equipped to do so, with the healthful benefits to follow.

And more and more people are deciding to quit, the overall number of adult smokers having decreased during the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, the number of teenage girls that are taking up the habit is actually increasing, which is a reason for concern. Smoking lowers levels of good cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease. And cigarette smoking combined with the use of birth control pills has also been shown to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Another factor that contributes to heart disease is high blood pressure or hypertension. Left untreated, the condition makes the heart work harder, speeds up hardening of the arteries (known as atherosclerosis) and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney failure. While high blood pressure can sometimes occur during pregnancy, it usually goes away after childbirth. Although high blood pressure cannot be cured, doctors say it can be controlled with diet, exercise, and, if necessary, medicines.

Cholesterol levels are another risk factor when it comes to heart disease, and women in general have higher cholesterol levels than men due to the positive effect of estrogen on HDL, one of the most important predictors of cardiovascular health, according to a study in the American Journal of Cardiology. In short, the higher the level of HDL cholesterol, the less likely a woman is to have a heart attack or stroke. Once a woman goes through menopause, however, HDL levels tend to drop, increasing the risk of heart disease. HDL and LDL cholesterol levels can be improved by diet, exercise and, in some cases, cholesterol-lowering medicines.

Want more out of life? One way is to become less of a person, at least so far as your weight is concerned. Obesity is certainly a strong predictor for heart disease, but where the weight settles is also an important factor. The Texas Heart Institute, based at Houston’s St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, says women who have a lot of fat around the waist are at greater risk than those who have fat around the hips. A plan of diet and exercise approved by a doctor is the best way to safely lose weight.

Yet another area of health concern in women at risk for heart disease is diabetes. A correlation between obesity, physical inactivity and high cholesterol levels may be part of the reason, but studies show that women with diabetes have a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease than men with diabetes do. Proper management of diabetes is, therefore, even more important to women, throughout Texas and elsewhere.

Birth control pills may also pose an increased cardiovascular risk for women, especially those with other risk factors such as smoking. Researchers believe birth control pills raise blood pressure and blood sugar levels in some women and also increase the risk of blood clots, risks which increase as women get older. The advice of some: communicate with your doctor about any other cardiovascular risk factors that might exist, before taking birth control pills.

Drinking alcohol on an excessive basis is another risk factor when it comes to heart disease in women, notably in terms of its contribution to obesity and the raising of triglyceride and blood pressure levels, all factors which can cause heart failure and lead to stroke. While some studies have shown that the risk of heart disease in those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol can be lower than among those who do not drink alcohol, it doesn’t mean those who do not drink should start or that those who do drink alcohol should increase the amount they drink. For women, a moderate amount of alcohol is considered to be one drink per day.

Hopefully, none of this is adding to your levels of stress, which is, itself, considered to be a contributing risk factor for both men and women. While researchers are as yet unclear about the relationship to heart disease, stress can lead to other risk factors such as smoking and overeating.

For women in particular, heart disease can be a significant health concern. Thankfully, there are things that anyone can do to reduce that risk. Yet even then, knowing that various options exist can be something of value.

By: Pat Carpenter

About the Author:

Women’s reproductive health is often as important as other aspects of their health and they need to gain a better perspective of their reproductive system to enable them to understand just how sensitive their reproductive organs really are. A woman who becomes concerned with women’s reproductive health may need to understand how her hormones as well as organs come together to produce a monthly cycle. Women’s reproductive health is also dependent on the diet they consume because the food that they intake will impact and influence their reproductive system’s functioning.

Need to Understand how Hormones and Organs Function Together

A woman’s system often goes out of control and this would affect their menstrual cycle and lead to their not becoming pregnant. To ensure those women’s reproductive system stays in sync, women need to get regular pap smears. An abnormal smear test often causes distress and fear among women even though it is not necessarily a sign of cancer or risking developing it in the future.

Since cervical cancer is the second most common cancer other than ****** cancer, taking a smear test is vital as it helps identify early warning signs of possible cancer and also lead to halting further growth of cervical cancer. Cancer is destructive of women’s reproductive health and apart from cervical cancer; women may also have to contend with uterine cancer or ovarian cancer. In addition, she may also get ovarian cysts, chronic pelvic pain as well as fibroids.

That is not to imply that women’s reproductive health is only centered on the pelvic region because even the ******* are an important part of the women’s reproductive system which enables the woman to ****** feed her children for years or just months. The risk of contracting ****** cancer is a serious worry to women’s reproductive health which may cause damage to the ******* and lead to infertility. In the case of a woman who has had mastectomy it may be rather disconcerting to have just one breast, but using reconstructive surgery, it is now possible to have both ******* back again.

Other major causes of worry to women’s reproductive health are when the reproductive system gets affected by infections such as yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis even though these are treatable conditions. However, pelvic inflammatory disease can cause scarring and even infertility if not treated in time. Thus, it is important for women to get to their doctors and keep their health in check.

By: Roland Jefferson

About the Author:

Looking for a good women’s health magazine can be daunting. Women’s health is big business. It’s not that your health is any worse than men’s. But with the additional burden of preventing conception and carrying children, your health is more easily and more commonly affected.

You may be looking for a women’s health magazine that provides you with effective, alternatives to drugs for gynaecological problems. No woman wants the inconvenience of long or painful periods and it’s worse when you’re trying to hold down a demanding job. But drugs take their toll too, from unwanted side effects to causing cancer.

A good quality women’s health magazine should cover aspects such as;

checking your ******* regularly for lumps. What about mammograms. They’re extremely uncomfortable, if not downright painful. Can they really be helpful? Are there any alternatives not offered you by mainstream medicine?

alternative contraceptive methods to the pill. It’s unfair that the role of responsibility for preventing unwanted pregnancies seems to fall, for the most part, on women. Although that means you’re more in control, it also means the potential of more harm to your body.

effective alternatives to surgery. You may prefer to explore these first, before committing to irreversible surgery.

Some gynaecologists think that nature got it wrong when creating a woman’s body, and that science can put it right. You may take exception to that idea. Or perhaps just don’t want your organs removed unless there really is no other choice.

Were you aware that the term hysterectomy is derived from the word hysteria? That may give you an insight into the way medical science views women in general.

Did you know that ****** cancer is big business in the pharmaceutical industry? Could it be that they don’t want you to know about cures because that would affect their business? There have been so many documented cases of natural cures of cancer now, that they’re almost common place.

Whatever it is you’re looking for in a quality women’s health magazine, there’s no getting away from the effective and low cost homeopathic treatment of gynaecological issues. And that’s not taking into consideration the lack of side effects or long term consequences. There just aren’t any.

Homeopathic treatment is all about getting to the cause of the problem. In your case that could be from typical women’s health issues such as taking the pill or childbirth, but it could also be from a more general cause such as concussion or a tetanus vaccine.

Did you know that there are two ways of using homoeopathic remedies? One is to use the services of a professional homeopath, which is the only sensible way to resolve deep issues.

But you can also use homoeopathic remedies in the safety of your own home, given some sound advice and a homeopathic home prescribing kit.

So a good quality women’s health magazine needs to cover aspects of general health, as well as that specifically related to women’s health. Aspects such as

a good die – after all, diet is such a large part of good health, you need to ensure you’ve got a handle on that.

dietary supplements – there are many available and they’re not all equal. How do you know which is most effective?

effective, alternative, natural medicines – why take drugs or have surgery if you don’t have to?

By: Madeleine Innocent

About the Author:

How african american skin care products work is surprisingly just like about any other skin care product. Skin is basically skin. The only real difference is the pigment or tone. Of course, skin problems can vary among ethnic groups. But the bottom line is that good skin care works for all skin tones IF the product has the right ingredients. So for african american, black skin, white skin or tan let’s see what is safe and effective.

Avoid These 3 Ingredients in Skin Care Products

1. Sodium methyl paraben (any type paraben)

2. Petroleum-based products

3. Chemical bleaching agents

1. Sodium methyl paraben can be found in many skin care products. It can affect the pigmentation of skin. Also parabens have been discovered in patients with ****** cancer. So it is best to avoid these ingredients. Parabens, and there are many different kinds, basically are in a product as a preservative. Parabens have been found in ****** cancer patients. There are safer ways to preserve a skin care product. I’ll come to that in a minute.

2. Petroleum-based products can be very harmful to the skin. Instead of de-pigmentation it can result in hyper pigmentation (hyper or excessive) of the skin. Uneven skin spots can materialize. If combined with the above paraben could result in a harmful condition. Also wood based alcohols, propylene glycol, mineral oil and other petroleum based ingredients can bring out a bad skin look. Avoid petrolatum in any product, just to be safe.

3. Chemical bleaching agents are often promoted to those who want to lighten their skin tone. There are safe skin lightening products. I’ll cover that also in a moment. Chemical bleaching ingredients can bring much harm to your skin. Avoid them especially if you have black skin or darker tones of skin.

Ingredients that are Safe to Use

*Extra Pone Nut Grass

*Vitamin E (If truly natural vitamin E)

Extra Pone Nut Grass will even out the skin tone especially on the face and neck. You won’t need very much of it to get good results. This is a safe and effective skin tone lightener.

Natural vitamin E fights free radicals that damage skin cells. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that will assist in helping to remove hyper pigmentation or skin spots.

Sebum Balancing With Moisturizers

Sebum is our natural skin oil. The amount can vary from one person to the next. The skin in some people is very dry to very oily and/or a combination of the two. So skin conditions can be different. But remember skin is still skin. Usually the problem with skin is much of the time in the skin care products one uses. For example, as stated above, many accept that petroleum in their skin products is okay when in fact it may be causing the problem you are perplexed with. Using a quality moisturizer with the ingredients I recommend will give you amazing skin problem relief. You will have no bad effects.

As mentioned sebum comes from the sebaceous glands. All skin tones, black, white, tan and any other skin have these glands. Sebum is there for the purpose of being the natural moisturizer for the skin. Two more ingredients to look for are jojoba and passion fruit extract. If you have dry skin, these two will help tremendously.

AntiAging Ingredients

It is a shame but much of the skin products being sold today with the promise of younger looking skin is a scam. Most don’t work. And at the best give very poor, if any, results. Many even cause great harm. For african american skin or black skin, you DO NOT need any special anti-aging skin care product. Here is what you need. Pay close attention because very few people know about this -miracle.

In all my searching and examinations, the best, most effective anti aging skin care ingredient that I have ever discovered that works for all skin types and tones is: Functional Keratin. When combined with Wakame seaweed, CoQ10 and Natural Vitamin E, new skin fibers and skin cells are produced. The result is that the skin is more firm and younger looking.

What causes harm to skin cells and other body cells is what is called free radicals. They basically go on a rampage and hurt other cells. The antidote is antioxidants found in compounds like vitamin E. Remember this please, avoid any ingredient ending in paraben, (for black skin especially Sodium methyl paraben). Avoid all skin care and other products that list petrolatum as an ingredient. Don’t even think about using a chemical bleaching agent. Use the ones I recommend. See my website for my personally tested skin cream. – Margaret Bell

By: Margaret Bell

About the Author:

How black skin care products work should be no mystery. African american or black skin is really no different than white, tan or any other tone. When it comes right down to basic facts: skin is skin. Only with few possibly ethnic differences, all skin tones have the same skin problems. Let’s look at the ingredients that work and the ones to avoid.

Three Skin Care Ingredients to AVOID

1. Any Paraben (esp. sodium methyl paraben)

2. Any Petroleum Based Product

3. Chemical Bleaching Compounds

1. Parabens are mainly used in skin care products as a preservative. They are unnecessary and potentially harmful. Parabens have been found in patients that have ****** cancer. Sodium methyl paraben can cause skin depigmenting. To be safe avoid all words ending in paraben. Read the label.

2. Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is not skin friendly as it is often promoted. It clogs the pores of the skin. Also it can result in hyper pigmentation of skin. Other related ingredients to strictly avoid are propylene glycol, wood-based alcohols, mineral oil and any petroleum-based product. There are other safe ingredients you can use. Keep reading.

3. Chemical bleaching compounds are dangerous. They are sold to lighten skin but can do great harm. There are effective, safe ingredients that will lighten skin. I’m coming to that in a moment.

Safe Skin Care Ingredients for ALL Skin

*Extra Pone Nut Grass

*Vitamin E (Must be natural vitamin E)

Extra Pone Nut Grass is a very safe and effective ingredient for lightening skin tones. The nice thing about this ingredient is that it takes just a small amount to work. Much better and safer than some chemical bleach.

Vitamin E (Natural) is a good antioxidant that battles free radicals that cause skin cell damage. Vitamin E works well with hyper pigmentation of the skin otherwise known as skin spots.

Sebum – The Natural Moisturizer

Sebum is our skin oil that also is our skin moisturizer. However, some of us have either too dry skin or too oily or some range in between. So skin problems can vary from one person to the next. But skin problems in general have nothing to do with black skin or any other tone. Skin is skin. What the problem usually is, is the product being used on the skin. Especially if it is petroleum based. Petrolatum feels good but it can do a lot of subtle harm. If you use a good moisturizer, like the one I use, you will have 90% of your skin problems solved.

Sebum comes from the sebaceous glands. All skin regardless of the tone have sebaceous glands. Some just produce differently in some individuals. Sebum is the natural moisturizer for our skin. Using alcohol on the skin can cause it to produce too much, resulting in oily skin. Jojoba and passion fruit extract are two ingredients you will want to include in your skin care regimen if you have dry skin.

Anti-aging Skin Care Ingredients

There are many anti aging skin care products on the market today that make false promises. Many are just out to make a quick buck caring little about what it does to your skin appearance. Remember this fact, For African American Skin you DON’T need special ingredients to fight aging skin. Let me tell you what you should do and what you need to get.

Be glad that you read this far. Those that didn’t won’t know what you’re about to find out.

In my vast searching for some skin care products that really work I found one that I am ecstatic about. The reason is that it is safe and it works on all skin types and skin tones. It is called “Functional Keratin”. When mixed with Wakame Seaweed (Japanese) CoQ10 and Vitamin E it produces new skin cells and fibers. This results in a younger looking skin because of the skin firmness that is taking place. See my website for more information on this truly amazing skin care ingredient.

Free radicals are the culprit behind most skin care damage. Antioxidants like natural vitamin E will help fight off these free radical rebels. In conclusion, please avoid all paraben ingredients, petroleum based ingredients and chemical bleaching methods. Use the ingredients I mentioned in this article and visit my website listed below for more details. Thanks, Margaret Bell.

By: Margaret Bell

About the Author:

A woman is beautiful as she is! Welcome to the power of women, the power that makes them just as capable, as smart, as funny, and as compassionate as men. More than that, it empowers them to take up her distinctive position in society, at the same time being a daughter, a wife, a mother, homemaker, and all the other roles her considerable responsibilities call upon her seemingly infinite energy. Along with this emotional fluency, skill required to make a family survive and the language of power, the quintessential woman needs to be physically fit as well.

Very few physical disorders are unique to women, or are more prevalent or serious in women. Medical wellness consultants will inform you that the earliest to appear are precocious puberty, anorexia and bulimia. Reproductive health concerns are a major focus of women’s health. Cancer is the leading cause of death in middle-aged women. Smoking contributes to numerous causes of death and disability among women.

Lung Cancer: Cancer accounts for maximum deaths among women aged between 35 to 54 years. For years, ****** cancer was the leading cancer killer among women, but now lung cancer takes the lead with more and more women taking to cigarette smoking. What makes this change frightening and dramatic is that lung cancer is a preventable disease, yet today it kills more women than ****** cancer.

Breast Cancer: There is, however, good news from women health specialists regarding ****** cancer treatment. Modification in surgical procedures, research indicating that estrogen receptors respond well to a drug called tamoxifen and experimenting with a new drug called RU-486, along with women taking a more active part in their health care are considerable contributions to the treatment of ****** cancer.

Gallstones occur four times more frequently in women than men. Attributed to multiple pregnancies, obesity, and rapid weight loss, the real cause of this disorder is still unknown. Stones are formed in the gall bladder due to a saturation of cholesterol and bile salts that crystallize and collect over time. A number of experimental drugs are being used as an alternative to a surgical approach called cholecystectomy.

Menopause and Osteoporosis: Post-menopausal women often suffer a disorder called Osteoporosis. Lack of estrogen after menopause causes loss of bone mass, resulting in weak bones that are susceptible to easy injury in case of a fall or mishap. There are no symptoms, and that is why Osteoporosis is known as the “silent disease”. Certain steps can be taken to prevent osteoporosis from ever occurring. Women over the age of 50 have the greatest risk of developing osteoporosis and Caucasian and Asian women are more likely to develop this condition. Heredity and less body weight are an important risk factors. Exercise, calcium, vitamin D, and post-menopausal estrogen replacement play an important role in preventing this disorder.

Thyroid abnormalities are four to five times more common among women than among men. While, there is effective treatment, the cause again is unknown. Arthritis and diabetes are other disorders that are more common in women. Lupus erythematosus is a disease in which 90 percent of the victims are women.

Hence, there are quite a few disorders that are more frequent in women than in men or that differentially affect women. While considerable progress has been made to combat most of these, there remains much to be learned about others.

It is every woman’s prerogative to form clear questions about her physical health, find clear answers, gain a sense of empowerment through knowledge, and inevitably achieve peace of mind through total wellness. Here is information shared, openly and candidly, associated with women health and wellness. We women need to arm ourselves. We need this knowledge to manage our own care.

By: Dr.Usha Kothari

About the Author:
